Yesterday the high pressure system finally left Teton Valley and in swooped our first storm in a while. Everyone was excited for a big powered at Grand Targhee, including your’s truly. When I woke up and called in to the snow report to hear eight inches had fallen with more to come, I headed up early to beat the crowds.
All the regular folks were there in the lift coral chatting away, wondering what it would be like. Clouds hid Fred’s mountain, never a great sign of things to come, and the word was about fifty early track skiers had already skied out Sac, so no use heading over there (my usual routine when it’s foggy).
I ride up the chair with my neighbor and catch up on stuff. He goes left, I go right. What a nightmare. The wind had completely wiped out any good snow. What was left was treacherous. Hard drifts you couldn’t see and even harder base between. I feared for my knees.
After one survival run I packed it in. Heading home after only one is a first for me at Targhee. But that still small voice inside said live to ski another day. There is more snow in the forecast so I know I made the right call. And it was honestly the worst skiing I’ve experienced in decades.
Just praying nobody gets hurt up there today. Plenty of season in front of us.
Sure enough! Today it was an epic powder day with over a foot of new snow. It was like night and day compared to yesterday.
So glad I quit early so I could get the most out of it!
